KOTT'S PANTHER DEN BILL BURDEN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL"I always loved art teachers because they were so bizarre. They were like the homeless people of the faculty -- all disheveled, wearing smocks, covered in paint, always digging through the garbage, looking for bottles and egg cartons and things." ~TED ALEXANDRO |
ELEMENTS OF ART
The elements of art are the building blocks used by artists to create a work of art. There are six basic elements of visual art. They are line, shape, color, value, and texture. Space can also be added.

SECOND GRADE - Collage
What’s not to love about these whimsical, colorful cats inspired by San Francisco artist, Laurel Burch? This fun project can be adapted to most any age group…. the examples here were done by second graders.
Students always enjoy learning about the lives of famous artists, and the story of prolific artist Laurel Burch (1945-2007) really inspired them! Her highly stylized artwork can be found on products from clothing to jewelry to dishes, but her strength of character is what's fascinating.
Laurel Burch is a great example of how a positive attitude can get you through all kinds of adversity.
She was resourceful…. As a self-taught artist and single mom in her 20’s, she started a business in her home selling her paintings and jewelry made from metal found in junk yards.
She knew how to persevere…. She suffered her entire life from a painful, rare bone disease called osteopetrosis. This caused her bones to be so brittle that she endured over 100 fractures in her lifetime, yet she rarely stopped working.
She thought of others more than herself…. Even though her life was hard, she was more focused on those around her than on herself, and she became known for her generous donations to charities.

THIRD GRADE - Petunia
"This book is an oldie, but a goodie! Lessons within include:
WORDPLAY: The author always refers to Petunia as a "silly goose." Then he proceeds to prove that description with the story. In this book, Petunia finds a book. She knows that reading is associated with intelligent beings, so she picks up the book and carries it with her. The other farm animals seek her wise counsel with disastrous results. I was always delighted when my students started referring to themselves as a "silly goose" when they did something foolish. It's so much more benign than some of the terms they bring from home.
GREATER THAN/LESS THAN CONCEPTS: When Petunia tries to help Mother Hen count her chicks, she miscounts and then declares that 6 is more than 9. You just have to help Petunia count those chicks!
MORAL OF THE STORY: One of the most endearing parts of any Petunia story is that she finally realizes the error of her ways and corrects her behavior. Oh the possibilities her lessons bring to elementary school students."

FOURTH GRADE
PIET MONDRIAN
Dutch modern painter Piet Mondrian is best known for his 1920’s works of art that feature only horizontal and vertical lines along with black, white and primary colors. These pieces reflect his belief that objects must be simplified down to their basic elements to reveal their energy and balance. Though he began his artistic career as a traditional landscape painter, his artistic work evolved and progressed until they were purely abstract versions of modern reality.
